COTS Insertion
Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technology insertion is a relatively new area growing rapidly in the military environment because of budget constraints and the shortage of full mil-qualified components. SDA engineers have designed and tested military systems for nearly 30 years. During that time, they developed an excellent understanding of military requirements. Military environments and operational requirements have become more demanding during that time. Commercial technology and product quality have improved, particularly in recent years. There are many examples today citing the successful use of commercial products in military applications. However, there are many other applications that will stress the best commercial products to their limits and beyond. Correct application of commercial products (COTS insertion), in high stress military systems is an area where SDA can deliver experience, expertise and guidance.
As an example, SDA provided packaging and thermal management expertise is support of a Navy COTS insertion effort to build and test a system enclosure. The enclosure housed commercial power supplies and VME cards for use in Navy helicopters. It is configured to be a form, fit, and function replacement for an existing unit with easy change subassemblies to facilitate upgrades as power supply and VME technologies change.
